The requirements for presence detectors vary greatly depending on the type of room and how it is used. Whether in offices, classrooms, conference rooms, warehouses or sports facilities – each area places special demands on the sensor technology. Presence detectors must be optimally adapted here to reliably detect whether people are in the room. This information forms the basis for intelligent building control, which efficiently regulates light, heating or ventilation as needed.

As a technology leader, we rely on a wide range of sensor technologies, including infrared, high-frequency, ultrasonic and optical sensors. Each of these technologies has specific advantages and is integrated into the development and production of our presence detectors. The result is customised solutions that offer maximum comfort, reduce energy consumption and enable sustainable building control.

STEINEL presence detector

Comfortable for everyday use

Presence detectors offer a high level of comfort by automatically controlling lights and systems. Brightness-controlled switching ensures that light is only switched on when needed. Even the smallest movements, such as typing on a keyboard, are detected to prevent unnecessary switching off. As soon as the room is vacated, the light and connected systems switch off automatically. This saves energy and increases comfort – everything works automatically, without manual intervention.

Diverse in the measurements

Presence detectors have long since ceased to be limited to detecting presence. Thanks to advanced multisensory technology, they can capture up to nine different sensor values, opening up new possibilities for intelligent building control. This data collection makes it possible to optimally adapt the indoor climate to the needs of people while maximising energy efficiency. The multi-sensor system not only makes buildings more intelligent, but also sustainably improves the well-being of the users.

Future-proof integration

STEINEL presence detectors are not only designed to meet today's needs, but also to meet future requirements. By using proven interfaces such as KNX and DALI, we ensure reliable integration into existing building control systems. At the same time, we are focusing on modern IP interfaces and Bluetooth mesh. This means that our products can be easily integrated into current and future IoT solutions and offer maximum flexibility for the requirements of tomorrow's digital building world.

The presence detectors recognise every movement, even in complex room situations, such as offices with partition walls.

Presence detectors help to analyse the use of space and enable efficient and resource-saving optimisation.

With the new Control PRO II Sensor series, we are focusing on advanced sensor technology and future-proof Bluetooth mesh. This opens up completely new possibilities in building automation, starting with installation. Additional cables are no longer necessary, as the wireless networking of sensors and luminaires enables flexible control via an app. The sensors are supplied with power either via a conventional 230 V cable or via existing network infrastructures using PoE (Power over Ethernet).

Presence detector in use

Hotel

Presence detectors in hotels increase comfort while reducing energy consumption. They detect whether guests are in the room and automatically control the lighting, heating and air conditioning. If the room is empty, these systems are shut down. Housekeeping also benefits, as it is immediately apparent whether a room can be cleaned. In corridors and public areas, the sensors only switch the light on when needed, which saves costs and energy.

To the hotel solutions

Office

Presence detectors automatically control lighting, heating and ventilation in offices. They detect whether employees are present and only switch the systems on when needed. If the office is empty, they are switched off, which reduces energy consumption. By detecting the smallest movements, such as typing on the keyboard, presence detectors prevent unnecessary shutdowns and ensure a pleasant working environment. This increases comfort and supports sustainable use.

Education

In the field of education, presence detectors play an important role in creating a pleasant and efficient learning environment. In classrooms or lecture theatres in particular, they automatically adjust the lighting to the available daylight. This means that only as much artificial light as is really necessary is used. Thanks to this daylight-dependent control, the room is always optimally illuminated without consuming unnecessary energy.

About our educational solutions

Apartment building

In apartment buildings, presence detectors are used in corridors, stairwells, underground car parks and communal rooms. They only switch the light on when it is needed, which reduces energy consumption and increases safety. The sensors also provide reliable detection in corners that are difficult to see. This ensures that rooms and paths are efficiently illuminated as soon as people or vehicles arrive, significantly increasing residents' comfort.

Residential construction solutions

Our sensor technology

Passive infrared

In garages, warehouses, driveways or courtyards, sensors are needed that can detect large radii. They also have to work reliably in damp and cold weather. This makes passive infrared (PIR) technology the technology of choice here. It detects the heat radiated by people and converts it into a measurable electrical signal. And because we at STEINEL want to offer the very best solution, we have further developed this technology to such an extent that our IR sensors provide the best detection quality on the market.

High frequency

Based on the Doppler principle, an active high-tech sensor emits signals that can easily penetrate glass, wood and lightweight walls and be sent back as an echo. If this echo image changes due to movement within the detection range, the sensor detects this and switches on the light in fractions of a second. High-frequency detectors are the right choice when it comes to providing seamless coverage in the most demanding of applications, such as schools, airports, administrative and office buildings, and complex areas.

Ultrasound

The ultrasonic waves are actively emitted by the sensor and propagate fully in the respective room. They fill the room to the last corner and enclose objects that are in the room. The sensor detects motion in the room, even if there is no visual contact between the sensor and the person. This makes ultrasonic sensors perfect for open-plan offices and rooms with lightweight construction. Ultrasound does not penetrate thin walls and is very sensitive. And that is precisely why it is recommended for rooms in which sedentary work is carried out.

True Presence®

Our True Presence® technology is based on the finest high-frequency measurements of the environment. The presence of people is indicated when three-dimensional breathing patterns (micro-movements of vital functions) are detected. The combination of an extremely sensitive antenna and unique sensor software ensures that the presence of people is detected 100%. And it does so so quickly and accurately that there is no need for a switch-off delay. The True Presence® product family offers revolutionary technology and is easily controllable via an app using Bluetooth.

The new Capstone® software solution makes it possible for the first time to recognise and visualise all IP and Bluetooth sensors and lights in the network, providing a complete overview of the building's status. Based on this data, optimisation suggestions can be made for better space utilisation and air conditioning.
