Car parks and underground car parks are usually operational around the clock. Good illumination of all surfaces is important for the personal sense of security of the users and for safely manoeuvring vehicles. However, if the light is switched on permanently, precious energy is wasted. Sensor-controlled lighting in combination with intelligent networking and light switching provides a remedy.
The car park of the Heuried underground car park was equipped as a pilot project with 240 wirelessly networkable RS PRO Connect 5100 LEDs from STEINEL. By investing in a modern and energy-efficient lighting solution, car park operators have the opportunity to achieve a high return on investment. At the same time, users enjoy more comfort and safety, making their stay in the car park more pleasant.

The energy efficiency of LED sensor lighting can be significantly increased by 'light intelligence'. The car park of the underground garage was equipped with 240 wirelessly networkable RS PRO Connect 5100 LED lights from STEINEL with an output of 30 watts, with every second light being a slave version. The lights were divided into four lighting groups and intelligently controlled. Forming lighting groups, switching them to a 10% basic lighting mode when there is no one present after one minute and switching them off completely after 15 minutes has resulted in a measurable energy saving of 92%.The light accompanies the user on their way through the underground car park. Light is only switched on where it is actually needed. This ensures that no energy is wasted.
Full operation below 10
Installation of the RS PRO Connect 5100 LED has significantly improved the illumination on the car park level. This makes the time users spend here much more pleasant. At the same time, a real measurement showed that electricity consumption could be reduced to 1.1 kWh/m². This is well below the current limit of 2.2 kWh/m². The measurement also showed that the lighting is only at full power 9% of the time and in a dimmed state 45.4% of the time. The lighting is in standby mode 45.6% of the time.
The energy consumption of the entire underground car park can be reduced by an estimated 94.3 MWh per year.
The new lighting solution almost doubled the illumination from 120 to 220 lux on average.
The networked, intelligent lighting solution has made it possible to save a huge amount of energy.
Easy Networking And Operation Via App
Forming lighting groups is useful for illuminating a large area such as the parking level of an underground car park. With the RS PRO Connect 5100 LED, no additional cables need to be laid for this purpose. The lights can be easily connected via Bluetooth using the intuitive STEINEL app. A group master must be specified for each of these lighting groups in the app. All the lights in a group then operate in the same way as the group master is configured. Other light functions such as the neighbour function, lighting parameters such as twilight setting, basic light, main light and time settings can also be easily set using the app. Practical: All settings are made from the ground. No ladder is required.
