The idea behind
Cargo freight area, Munich Airport
Busy operations, day in, day out – that's everyday life at Munich's Franz Josef Strauß Airport. Visibility and safety are crucial, particularly in the vicinity of the cargo area, where there are many obstacles and potential hazards. Continuous lighting is not expedient in terms of energy costs and environmental pollution, which is why Flughafen München GmbH decided on STEINEL's intelligent, sensor-switched solution. The high quality of light, the close-knit network of sensors and Bluetooth networking of STEINEL's 5100 series makes all the difference in the cargo freight area. A total of 1,300 5-core through-wired lights and approx. 200 additional detectors for high altitudes were installed. According to its own calculations, the airport saves 230 tonnes of CO2 a year with this system, which is equivalent to the CO2 absorption of approx. 18,400 trees. Other reasons why Munich Airport chose the STEINEL linear fluorescent light fitting are the easy installation, the reuse of the existing cabling and the use of existing drill holes, as well as the parameterisation of the system via an app.

"The aim of the project was to find a long-term, durable and, above all, energy-efficient lighting solution for our cargo area."
All the benefits at a glance

Special situation, special solution
The special feature of this reference project is the installation of the 5100 series at a height of 6 metres. The IR Quattro HD 2 COM 1 presence detector was used to expand the actual detection area with a maximum mounting height of 4 metres and to ensure that lighting is provided when it is needed. This expands the detection area and guarantees lighting across the entire surface.

Bluetooth Mesh - future-oriented technology
The new Bluetooth Mesh technology opens up a whole new range of networking possibilities. The Bluetooth technology we use meets the requirements of the Bluetooth SIG standard and is therefore future-proof.
The CO2 savings correspond to the absorption capacity of 18,400 trees.
Built-in IR Quattro HD sensors for extended range imaging.
This can save up to 12% of energy without the guest noticing.

Potential savings
With the RS PRO 5100 SC, a huge amount of CO2 can be saved compared to a T5 light source, which in turn leads to cost savings of over €100 per light fitting.
Particularly in view of the ban on T5 lamps from September 2023, everyone should be looking into the issue of conversion. Connected Lighting is the solution for not only converting, but also maximising savings potential.
